Dr. Andrew Hughes is a board-certified psychiatrist. Originally from North Dakota, he has called the Pacific Northwest home for many years. His journey into mental healthcare started while studying psychology at the University of British Columbia, where he worked to expand the understanding of human behavior through cognitive neuroscience and positive psychology research. A desire for a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection led him to return to his home state to attend medical school. After graduation, he moved to Portland, OR where he was a chief resident in the Oregon Health & Science University psychiatry research track, and conducted research in nutritional psychiatry. Upon finishing residency he opened his Portland-based private practice, with a focus on psychotherapy and lifestyle interventions.
Dr. Hughes has published multiple papers across the fields of mental health and neuroscience, and has received international awards for presenting his research.
Dr. Hughes believes in the importance of a safe, trusting doctor-patient relationship in which you can feel comfortable to express yourself as you are. When caring for his patients, he combines his psychiatric training, understanding of human physiology, and research experience in order to offer nuanced diagnoses and individualized treatment plans.
